There are three things I like most of all:
-the people
-the fact I left home
- challenge
First of all, studies is an excellent opportunity to meet people who are young individuals, at your age, with inquiring minds and strong personalities, talented and... strikingly different from each other. It's my experience and my view about about studies as all my neighbours in a hall of residence, each of them, were unique and one of a kind.
Students are drawn from very mixed social backgrounds. I come from a working class one and was born and brought up in a small, provincial town. I found myself a member of such vibrant community overnight, where every single person has a different idea about what is life. It was all very new and strange to me.
I was bombarded with dozens of theories and I d i d n ' t know who was telling the truth. Total confusion is a first feeling. As a consequence you have to figure out what y o u think, what is
y o u r own opinion. Step by step you start to find yourself in this absolute chaos. It is quite an experience. The one that greatly stimulates your psychological development. Besides, people and their personalities have always fascinated me, and the way they are so complex and so simple at the same time. I'm fond of meeting new people and and the process of trying to understand them gives me endless and genuine pleasure.
Second aspect I mentioned was a fact I left home. I pride myself in being a kind of experience-hungry girl, always determined to be unlike anyone else, thriving on being different, unique and even rebellious. Leaving home after almost 20 years spent with caring and loving parents, (a bit overprotective sometimes) to share a small space with another two roommates which are total strangers is a challenge. In fact the smallest one you have to deal with during studies. I've been faced with all manner of adult-life problems that I was forced to cope with on my own for the first time. It's the first time you get to know yourself. It's the very first opportunity to find out who you really are, what is easy for you , what is completely out of your reach. It's essential for your future life to gain such knowledge. And don't forget... it's thrilling and worthwhile.
Last but not least, the academic course you decided to complete is a your major challenge and you don't have the faintest idea what it is going to be like and whether you finally manage or not. At the very beginning it is unfortunately almost impossible to discover which classes are worthwhile and which are not worth your time and you can miss them guilt-free. If you are not familiar with organizing your time it's the last moment to become so. What you should know is that learning to organize yourself so late is painful.
To sum up, studies are an unforgettable experience for me because of the people I was lucky to meet, invaluable experience and knowledge about myself I gained and the marvellous feeling of facing a huge challenge and having managed.
.....
Probably that memories mentioned are not true as brain tends to deceive us and perhaps all this bombast is unnecessary, but it sounds good, isn't it?
